The Vale, watercolour and body colour on Arches paper.
One of a series of paintings investigating identity, with themes of memory and loss. In this picture, aside from the literal physical reflections in the water, the theme of the work is intense, inner, spiritual, reflection. The Vale in the title references the latin phrase: valle lacrimarum or vale of tears, which suggests that life is a series of sorrows that only death can release us from. Their is a long passage of time (several weeks) contained in the work which is many layered, ambiguous and pays no attention to scale.
