The act of migration escapes from representation: initiatic journey connecting African stowaways, their long odyssey at sea, and the Great Italian “diaspora”, the biggest mass migration of contemporary time, because of its mythopoietic nature it can be only evoked by a series of ritualistic gestures, vanishing memories imprinted on film, where “moving images” stand for “escape” rather than “representation”.Leaving Home is an entire composition eternally searching for a balance point which is ideally put outside of the composition itself. Techniques like rubbing and brushing are borrowed from Bacon’s paintings, using Super 8 film and vintage emulsion with a contemporary approach. Vaseline on lens is not employed for emulating soft focus, but in order to semplify visual patterns in an ambiguos way, creating new and unexpected connections between objects: as Brakhage said of Patrick Bokanowski’s cinema “an eye unprejudiced by compositional logic, an eye which does not respond to the name of everything but which must know each object encountered in life through an adventure of perception” . Simplifying visual patterns is here paradoxically aimed to continuously create obstacles to the vision process: Gestalt theories of perception have teached us that vision is always a creative process; its creativeness is directly proportional to the number of obstacles found in the path.
