Skin Deep
85 x 55 x 55cm wooden box, mirrors, LED strip lights
Rummage around inside the tunnels, ravines and valleys of your mind and take them on a new journey undefined by their predestined past or ambitious hopes for its future. Turn the anxiety in on itself to the point that it can no longer behave in the manner it has become accustomed. What is there is reflected back here. You cannot possibly programme where it might be headed next.
You travel to work, you turn on the telly, the radio, the laptop. You read a book, you stack a shelf, you wash the kids, you hear the news, you have a dream.
The snippets, the glances and the fragments that are absorbed on any given day. Layers build up and images refract around inside our heads. How might this look? Some we know we’ve experienced, some we think we’ve experienced, others we’re not aware that we’ve experienced and some we want to and some we don’t. Once they are extracted from our world outside, they are not stored away but continue to evolve. Inside our heads, they merge and bounce but no light is required as in the physical world. They become conflated, take on new forms, cross over dimensions and reappear as other manifestations. They might harbour around for years unnoticed before they resurface.
What control do we have? what control are we told we should have? What control do we want to have? Seemingly unconnected fragments blend to make a coherent whole, blend to make us who we are.
