I believe that “contrast” isn’t solely about things being in black and white. Both in a physical sense and a metaphorical sense, “contrast” can refer to a disparity — a disparity between a hope and a reality for instance, or a disparity between the past and the now.
This series of work looks at negatives of photographs I had taken as a child. I think the most important issue raised here is that of analogue vs. dialogue. The contrast between the out-of-focus photographs taken when I was 8 years old with a Kodak film camera, with that of the sharp images of the negatives taken with a digital camera 11 years later sees the negatives become objects in their own right, rather than a means to an end as they would have been in the development process of film photography in the past. I find this contrast within my work quite engaging, alongside the aspect of self-exploration in which might I compare my eight-year-old-self with who I am today.
