Animation and video are wonderful. They are often described with words such as movement, change, and humour. We have a close relationship with them as we use video to capture moments in our life. Similarly animation is either used to entertain or to advertise a product which I think deflects its natural qualities. Concepts such as immersion, abstraction, formlessness, and immateriality can all be digitally explored, allowing for a diverse artistic environment.

This new digital space that artists are delving in has many possibilities with regard to the distribution of both personal and political ideas. My work attempts to communicate the societal educative possibilities framed within a moving image. Throughout my life I have struggled to come to terms with the lack of equality in the world and the control money has over our lives. These thoughts related to my future as well as a constant questioning of my own ability to exist as an artist, had began to occupy my mind on a regular basis. To resolve this matter I created an animation Away from the Unknown that used existing material in the form of previously spoken words.

I appropriated the words of the psychologist Steven Pinker because they communicate a sense of the disenchantment thinking about money’s affect on life can yield. This work attempted to highlight the need to realise that money is not that important, but that rather one’s happiness and perspective on life is. The above citation and its use in my work could be read as a comment on the value of what is immaterial over what is purely material.
