As prison is a space of reflection, looking back and at oneself. Reflection is evident in the paint’s surface texture, especially the highly reflective paint, in contrast to the matte. My aim is to render luminosity by creating a light catcher in paint.
The painting is very interactive and it reacts to light and movement in the space. The light is pushed forwards and back, the darkest glossiest black holds the brightest light. The viewer is made aware of the surface as they approach the work. It reacts to their presence as they block and unblock the light and catch glimpses of their reflection within the glossy boundaries of the square. The viewer is confronted with themselves, then moving across the painting the viewer disappears into the matt surface of the paint and is confronted with a void, nothingness.
