These paintings are literally paintings of masks. In the images, they obscure identities. On the surface ofthe paintings, one could say there is a skin. This skin is the layer of paint, which holds the image of the mask, amongst other forms. The skin is painted usually in one go, so as to seem whimsical and fresh. The freshness is important;I don’t want anything to seem too laboured. However, the point is, the skin of the painting actually acts as the thing it is representing in a perverse way. These paintings are, plastically, about guises. The apparent playful nature of the paintings quality eventually lends way to a more serious or unsettling narrative. The paintings skin actually seems to be masking other qualities too.
