My photo-montage landscapes explore the divisions between consciousness and reality: the play between these two experiences providing the basis for my work.
I have been exploring the idea of representing a particular landscape through an assemblage of hundreds of photographic elements, taken on site at a particular time, and within particular circumstances. Whilst each element is photographically true, the overall composition is a structure of my imagination. A landscape recalled in consciousness is an assemblage of such details and elements into an overall representation.
The idea of consciousness and its relationship to an experience of landscape produces works which inhabit the arbitrary divisions between what is imagined and what is real. Being is perhaps nothing more than what we imagine. The experience of life is a lens through which a world is revealed. The mind gathers what passes through this lens, and in doing so the representation of a landscape becomes neither subjecctive or objective, but omnijective.

In recent years I have begun work on a series of images exploring a fresh response towards my landscape collages. I call these pieces, Observations.
I am interested in the idea of Whole System: the understanding that each single aspect of an event is not merely itself in isolation, but is in relation to every other aspect of the event — an expression of the whole.
Repeatedly capturing (using cine film) a single viewpoint of a small part of a larger overall system as it passes before me, these works produce an expression of a larger whole — in a pattern and composition of their own design. In these works, creativity is in the complex act of observation. The final resulting image — not belonging to me but to the observation itself — explores the relationship between individual aspects of the whole subject and documents the changes that occur within that viewpoint over an exact period of observation.
