Some of my drawings illustrate an available and vulnerable sexuality that is incontrast to the modern American views of what is taboo and what isnot. My first first nude, Self III,emphasizes a bold and pure physical side of myself. It is a step mywork has taken to sustain the beauty of expressing ourselves in aworld full of sensory. I create a natural form of art that isintimate and personal in the relationships between myself, my models and theviewer. There is a sense of isolation in my drawings and a still ofexpressions they are so subtle and beautiful that I have to capturethem, recreate them into an infinite life of their own. I want mywork to provoke people, love or hate. It is important for me toremind people as a visual artist of their own feelings and beliefs.
I use high quality black andwhite prints to draw from. Using charcoal powder, I do a quick gesture toget a rough idea of where to start, then tape it to the wall. Withan eraser I carve out the figure of the face, body and head.Charcoal pencils are used for fine detailing, white pastel is fordramatizing the highlights and charcoal powder is used to give asofter look in some areas. Eachstroke is a deliberate action to capture the postures, charactersand emotions. Each drawing takes roughly 2 to 4 months tofinish, depending on the intricacy.

‘The work is primarily about the fractured nature of our perception of space, and how that perception can be manipulated. Cartography was the initial conduit to my exploration of space as no source of material is ripe for appropriation than maps. As well as being formally beautiful objects they, like drawing, offer us a way of understanding, organising, manipulating and perceiving space. By using the maps I have collected as source material to plot places I have visited around Europe, I create an autobiographical link to the marks that lift them from ambiguity, making them reflective of the human journey through life that we all share, and an abstract diary of my journey. I use the co-ordinates on the maps to create “abstract events” and layers of intertwining information on the picture plane. The work is intriguing by its simultaneous ability to both create and then subvert and block expectations using different pictorial and formal devices to create a tension, ambiguity and juxtaposition between figure and ground, opaque and sharp, clear and muddied and depth and shallowness.’
