The drawings in the series Corpus exemplify my need to make marks, the urgency of the act, and while they appear to be carefully constructed they are in fact beyond my control for the most part. Even though the moves have become an instinctual routine the product is always unique. The result is a combination of conscious and unconscious moves, the impulse of the artist against the uncontrollable will of the medium.
These drawings we can see the image of the cranium as seen by MRI, the butterfly shape of the pelvis, limbs, structural orifices and soft tissues. The title Corpus derives from two sources: the fact that the images resemble the human body and the sexual nature present in the work. The term ‘corpus cavernosum’ refers to the erectile tissue present in both men and women, the part of the body that fills with blood upon arousal. Again, I am inspired by the conscious and unconscious abilities within the human form.
