‘The real act of discovery consists not in finding new lands, but in seeing with new eyes,’ Marcel Proust.
My etchings respond to the Manchester Herbarium archives which are unfortunately, becoming obsolete. I am interested in the specimen labels and recipes, which have now become a hidden and valuable apothecary. By refocusing on what has been written before and using a labour intensive drypoint technique, I indulge my preoccupation with process.
Long hours have been spent in the herbarium, where I consider and re-edition the handwriting of botanists including Sir Charles Darwin, Admiral Franklin and the great Swedish naturalist Linnaeus. By denying the freedom of my own line and replicating theirs, I make prints to represent vital discoveries and question our value systems.
