What we require is silence, Ice Projection, 2012.
‘What we require is silence’ is an artwork influenced by John Cage’s theories of silence and music. This artwork was produced in Finland in January 2012, after a two month artist in residency program. The eery silence you experienced in most sites was a rhythmic pulse of nothingness, so much so, just like the anechoic chamber, you could hear the steady beat of your heart, or the erratic hum of your nervous system. These subtle undertones of sound influenced me to make a layered video work that recorded the silence life of particularly silent sites, I experience in Finland. From there I experimented with freezing water and made an ice sculpture to project my video onto, which once projected upon, absorbed all the video and sound, like the snow and similarly the anechoic chamber, to leave you with this abstract blue projection upon the wall that looked like the rhythmic flow of water.
