The thematic core of my work focuses on the concept of lacking. Some of my recent paintings intent to reflect the abandoned industrial spaces in St. Louis. These building are relics and my paintings intend to reflect this presence in absence. I use color not only for its chromatic variation but also as a variable of substance, thickness, porosity and brightness. I want my paintings to be deep images, moving slowly like echoes. Italo Calvino’s ideal of structural lightness inspires all my work; that lightness is the quality of artwork which manages to stimulate the viewer’s interpretative response despite its apparent simplicity.

A contrast of life and death, funeral and festival.
This work was created as part of “The Fall Of The Majestic Elk” project (http://majesticelk.weebly.com/)
The skull, a found object from a second hand shop in London, was the starting point to the work and was already sprayed gold. In this form it had been a piece of work used by an artist called Piers Wardle who died in Dec 2009. Taking his work and using it a new piece seems a fitting tribute emphasising the themes of death and renewal in the piece.
Relic #21 after Piers Wardle, 2011. (35cm x 60cm x 35cm. Artificial flowers, wire, paint, bone).
